A Pink Diamond Investment – Is It Worth It?

What makes a Pink Diamond Pink?

Various theories have been presented regarding the origin of the pink diamond’s unique hue. Some suspect that the enormous pressure undergone by pink diamonds during formation is a likely cause, though others believe it could be related to a seismic shock that impacted the stone’s molecular structure.

Though the exact cause of the pink diamond’s color remains unknown, it offers the world a beautiful stone for engagement rings, bracelets and earrings.

Pink Diamond Intensity Levels

The shade of a pink diamond is graded according to its intensity and strength of color. In addition to its main hue, pink diamonds can have a secondary color or overtone, such as purple, brown or orange.

The GIA grades pink diamonds on the following scale:

  • Faint
  • Very Light
  • Light
  • Fancy Light
  • Fancy
  • Fancy Intense
  • Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep or Fancy Dark

Why Pink Diamonds

Pink diamonds are one of the most valuable stones in the world, and they are certainly the most expensive shade of diamond, except for perhaps the red diamond which is so rare it is almost impossible to purchase.

Pink diamonds, however, are also rare, and they will always be finite, which is one of the reasons they are so highly sought-after. Rarity has a direct correlation with price in the field of diamonds, and since rarity is guaranteed, you can feel safe knowing that your investment will be a sound one.

The Argyle Mine

There is only one reliable location in the world where you can mine diamonds and that is the Argyle mine, situated in the far north of Western Australia. This mine produces 90% of the world’s diamonds. Since its opening in 1983, the price of the diamonds has never gone down, even in times of economic hardship and financial struggle.

In the past 11 years especially, many of the pink diamond prices have increased by 367%, making them a hard and stable investment, and one that clearly shows strong growth.

Now that the mine is said to close in early 2019, experts say that the price of these diamonds will rapidly increase as new diamonds will no longer actively be mined. This makes pink diamonds an intelligent investment. Studies show that their price has only ever grown, that it will continue to grow, and that it cannot be affected by the financial environment.

A Wearable Investment

One of the best parts about diamonds as an investment, especially when compared to investments such as stock or homes, is that they can be worn. Diamonds may be fashioned into a variety of beautiful, elegant and timeless pieces, including earrings, necklaces and rings. Investing in something that can actively be used to provide you with joy and happiness is a strong and intelligent move.
